My Approach
We see ourselves in a certain way as a result of a lifetime of conditioning, and we evolve habits and problem solving techniques as we go. This view can limit us in ways we don't realize. Finding new perspectives and exploring new and inventive ways to view our problems can help clear the path. Working together we can expand the creative process in solving problems and find new tools to work with.
My world view was born out of a lifelong interest in Jungian thought, which views the individual as more than a set of nervous disorders with a cognitive behavioral solution to every problem. Jung believed that the more you know about yourself, the more able you are to access your own inner healing processes. I work with your unique strengths and am not judgmental about behaviors that can block the way, although I advocate a clear-eyed look at them. I work with dreams in the belief that the psyche understands more than we can see and can lead the way to change. I see myself as more of a guide and an ally in a person's efforts to develop neglected parts of the self and I recognize a person's ability to grow and change over an entire lifetime.
I know that you are unique and that you are more than your problem or your personality. While who we are today is a result of our life experience and conditioning, I work in the present to untangle old patterns that may no longer be useful, and encourage the gifts and talents that you may have overlooked.
Therapist as Coach: My work is also informed by a lifetime of competitive sports activities in which I have learned the power of incremental growth through practice and the power of perseverance. I also understand the power in having an advocate who understands where you want to go and how you want to get there and who holds you accountable to your goals. I was trained in basic life coaching skills by Henry House who co-founded the International Coaches Institute.
